Meryl Tankard

Celebrated Director & Choreographer

Meryl Tankard is one of Australia’s iconic choreographers. she produces affecting, compelling and absorbing dance productions that have been seen worldwide. Meryl’s work ranges from the intricate and intimate to large-scale, site specific commissions which are transformative both to the space they reside in and to the audience. It is this diversity and creativity that has attracted international artistic acclaim and commercial success. Meryl began her career as a dancer with the Australian Ballet and then moved on to join Pina Bausch’s Wuppertaler Tanztheater, becoming one of the company’s leading artists. She created roles in Cafe Muller, kontakthof, Arien, 1980, amongst others and danced with the company for a period of 10 years. Meryl returned to Australia to create her own work and in 1989 began building a rich repertoire of work firstly with her company in Canberra and then as director of Australian Dance Theatre from 1993-1999. Full-length productions include Furioso, Possessed, Aurora, songs with Mara, Two Feet, Rasa and Inuk. Since 2000 Meryl has been working freelance, creating the opening segment of the 2000 Olympic Games Ceremony in Sydney, Bolero for the Lyon Ballet, Merryland and Petrushka for Netherlands Dance Theatre 3 and 1, Wild swans, a full-length ballet for The Australian Ballet and most recently Cinderella for the Leipzig Ballet. Meryl has also choreographed for London’s West End and for Disney on Broadway. In 2010 Meryl gained a Graduate Diploma in Film Directing from the Australian Film Television and Radio school and is currently developing a music theatre work and writing a feature film.
